Remembrance Day National Canadian Holiday? Yea or Nay?

NDP Petition:Remembrance Day Stat Holiday Yea? Nay?
CBC asked viewers their opinion on whether Remembrance Day should be a national holiday Many Canadians were surprised to find out that Remembrance Day is not National Holiday. While Remembrance Day is a holiday in most provinces and territories, it is not a statutory holiday in Ontario. Who could not want to make Remembrance Day a National Holiday? Apparently, quite a few people.

Remembrance Day National Holiday - Yea

The main camp wanting to make Remembrance Day a national holiday point to the importance of honouring veterans, by allowing people to not have to work on Remembrance Day and take part in Remembrance Day Ceremonies. In addition, people point to the long list of provinces and territories where Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday. Where is Remembrance Day not a statutory holiday in Canada? Only Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Manitoba do not mark Remembrance Day as a statutory holiday. Some people asking for it to be a statutory holiday, point to veterans who need to use one of their sick aka personal days to be able to attend Remembrance Day Services. However many point to valid reasons to not make Remembrance Day a national statutory holiday.

Remembrance Day National Holiday - Nay

Petitions and bills asking that Remembrance Day be a statutory holiday have beenn presented by members of all three political parties for years. The Royal Canadian Legion in previous years have asked it be left up to the veterans in each province to decide whether it should be a statutory holiday. One commenter said that the Royal Canadian Legion requested Remembrance Day not be a statutory holiday in the 1970's. Many people in provinces where Remembrance Day is a statutory holiday, do not take part in Remembrance Day ceremonies - rather it's become a shopping day. Others point to the costs to small businesses in particular in having to pay overtime, and are concerned about a negative impact on the economy.

Remembrance Day National Holiday - Alternative - Editorial Note

Could it be possible a private members bill be put forward that Remembrance Day be observed in workplaces across Canada and all employees be encouraged to attend public services as a group, and veterans receive special dispensation on Remembrance Day?
