Ontario Seniors Targeted By Air Purifier Fraudsters!
Police Seek More Cases - Help By Reporting Your Tips!March 12, 2012 , Peterborough Lakefield Community Police became aware of a scam involving two people fraudulently selling air purifiers and water filtration units to senior citizens living in the Hamilton area. The Hamilton Police Service alerted the Peterborough Lakefield police to the scam and noted that they are aware of least one victim in the Peterborough area.
Air Purifier RebatesPromised Not ReceivedMarch 15, 2012, officers in Peterborough met with the victim, an 87-year-old Peterborough woman. The victim reported that between February 2011 and October 2011 she purchased three separate air purifiers from the two suspects with a company called Global Air Care. The victim received numerous calls from this company stating that she either needed a newer, up-to-date unit or filters for the existing unit. The victim was promised a rebate for the three units she purchased over this time period but never received the rebate.
Water Purifier Sales May Be LinkedNovember 2011, the victim received another visit from a sales consultant with a company called Marshall Eco Smart Solutions, based out of Mississauga. The victim believes that this was a new name for Global Air Care. The sales consultant tried to sell the victim a water filtration system, but a family member of the victim was able to intervene before a fraud occurred.
The total amount of the fraud is approximately $10,800. Peterborough Lakefield police continue to investigate this incident.
Two Hamilton MenChargedCharged with offences out of Hamilton are Joel Agranove, 52,and Scott Kingston,36. Agranove and Kingston are each charged with (two counts of unlawfully in a dwelling house and two counts of fraud under $5,000.
